The school was named in honour of Richard Dick King and his epic ride along the Natal coast. Dick King rode from the Port of Natal to Grahamstown to save the settlement from a Boer attack. He did this without stopping once, and enabled the British settlement to be saved. Because of his courageous deed he has been honoured in our school song. On May 15, 1985, a plague and portrait of Philip Bazley, the fourth principal of the school, was unveiled. Mr Bazley was principal of the school from 1964 until his untimely death in 1972. The school hall now bears his name in his honour. In 1992 the school adopted the Model B status, allowing the administration of the first non-white pupils. Later the school converted to Model C, which allowed the election of a Governing Body of parents to run the school. Since then, the school opted for Section 21 status, allowing for the continued parental involvement. In 2000, a state-of-the-art Science and Biology laboratory was opened. This multi-million rand science centre fulfils the continued education excellence that is Kingsway High School. |
