ITS CRUNCH TIME
Night Series title chase set to go to the wire
Kingsway High School’s 1st rugby team bounced back with a 10-0 victory against Pinetown Boys this past Friday, February 16, after a shaky start to their Lords & Legends Night Series title defence the previous week, which saw them narrowly go down 7-5 to bitter rivals Toti High.
Mr F Oosthuizen’s charges went into this encounter fired up after their disappointing showing last week in a match headlined with a lot of unforced handling errors on both sides and scrappy turnovers at the breakdown. So, the game verses Pinetown Boys was not only an opportunity for the boys to redeem themselves but it became a must win after fellow title contenders and arch rivals Kuswag registered an emphatic 29-0 bonus point victory against Pinetown in the previous round.
During the pre-match interview with the two coaches Mr F Oosthuizen said, “Tonight we need to be disciplined, stick to the tactics and the game plan and the rest will take care of itself”. His opposite number Mr N Kunene said, “It should be a tough one against Kingsway but our boys (Pinetown) have worked hard this week and they know what needs to be done after the match against Kuswag this week.” When asked about which players could pose a potential threat to their chances of winning the game he mentioned that scrum half Tristan Vermark and fullback Malusi Makhanya are players to watch.
After a scoreless first half Kingsway came out in the second half determined to capitalise on the lion’s share of possession and territory they commanded in the first half, with two unconverted tries’ by Dean Nyland and Charlie Bekwa.
Speaking on the side-lines after this all important victory, Kingsway High School sports director Mr D Oosthuizen said that the guys came back strongly after last week’s disappointment against Toti High. “Next week we face Kuswag who are undefeated so far in the series and the boys have to step it up to get a result against this seasons inform team so far. As for tonight what stood out for me was the character from the guys as you could see they were fighting for each other out there which is what you need in this game,” Mr Oosthuizen said.
Kingsway goes into next week’s crunch tie against Kuswag having to win by a 33 points difference to secure a top place finish in the group and book a place in the final with Lower South Coast Night Series log leaders Port Shepstone.
